Remington Carriage Museum

The Remington Carriage Museum is the largest museum of its kind in the world and tells the history of horse-drawn transportation in North America. The museum features displays showcasing over 250 vehicles, a children’s activity area, a working restoration shop and a stable.

The Remington Carriage Museum opened in 1993, but the origins of the project can be traced back to 1954, when local resident Don Remington began collecting and restoring horse-drawn vehicles. Over the course of thirty years, Mr. Remington gathered together a collection of forty-nine vehicles.

In 1985, Mr. Remington and his family decided to offer his collection as a donation to the people of Alberta. They requested that a museum be built in Cardston to house and display the collection. The Government of Alberta accepted the offer and in addition to building the museum brought more vehicles into the collection from the Royal Alberta Museum, the Glenbow Museum and the Reynolds Museum. Over the years, private donations have also been made bringing the total number in the collection up to 330 vehicles.
